Our first site visit included a guided tour and introduction to this year’s events at Festival of Thrift with Festival Director, Stella Hall who believes that ‘The Latest Edition’ project perfectly reflects the Festival’s aims to help build a creative community -
“It’s about empowering artists with business acumen and up-skilling them by giving them increased commercial awareness which they can test out first-hand with the 40,000 plus visitors we are expecting. Making artists more business aware will, feed back into the communities where they live and work, both financially and culturally, as well as increasing the sustainability of the local economy by making it more diverse.”
Stella Hall, Festival of Thrift Director
During the visit we got behind the scenes and were given access to Kirkleatham Museum’s collection store, where Collections Officer, Janet Williamson showed the artists the wide ranging artefacts which form the collection. These included everything from antique maps, engineering equipment, taxidermy and even a full size double decker bus!
The group also spent some time in The Pavilion which will be where the exhibition takes place, looking at the space and finding out more from Cultural Services Co-ordinator at Kirkleatham Museum, Joanne Hodgson.
Watch out for our next update, where we’ll be letting you know more about the progress of the artists and the project as well as here on the project website.
